Looking ahead to winter 2012/13 you’ll see fashion take a walk on the dark side. Gothic, edgy but feminine fashions take over from a summer filled with colours and girlieness. Pastels are out and are replaced by plum, steely greys, cobalt blues and lots and lots of black. Lace, sheer, embellishment and golden touches are strong looks and the overall silhouette is feminine but slightly rough around the edges, so think a prom dress with Dr. Marten’s boots.

There’s also a punk element interwoven in amongst all the ‘angsty’ black. Tartan, high-waist skirts and trousers, socks with shoes, masculine shirts, blazers and emblazoned crew-neck jumpers make this look street, urban and utterly wearable. It will be fun to experiment with textures and histories and create a montage of looks ready for winter.

So how does this look transpire into occasion dresses? Answer: quite easily actually. Dresses form the backbone of this gothic-meet-romantic-meets-punk look.

A New Look prom dress, such as the Black Velvet Bodice Mesh Prom Dress £29.99 is absolutely perfect. The floaty chiffon skirt combined with the rich velvet bodice are just divine and this prom dress couldn’t be more on trend if it tried. Styling wise, add an embellished belt, black suede shoe boots or Dr. Marten’s boots and leather or PVC bomber jacket to ooze dominatrix style gothic glamour.

Allure Short Dress

Another key look for winter 2012/13 is inspired by one of fashion’s favourite eras: the 1960s. Moddish, angular and effortlessly chic, sixties fashion this winter is full of preppiness, detail and lots of leg – dresses are therefore essential. Tartan, roll-neck sweaters, cropped trousers and monochrome look great when combined with androgyny. Twin sets, macs, a-line and shift dresses, dogtooth and plenty of details such as oversized buttons and satchels add a girly femininity that is not seen elsewhere this season. This look is translated easily to dresses. Mini in length but packed with character, sixties style dresses have round necklines, drop-waists and cut away shoulders. New Look’s Black PU Pocket Sleeveless Shift Dress, £19.99, fits with this trend harmoniously.
