We’re already into October, which can only mean one thing – those festive party invites are going to start coming in thick and fast during the next couple of months. So, given that everyone else will probably be digging their little black dress out of the back of the wardrobe, I’m going to go with the LBD’s opposite number, the Little White Dress.
Sandra Bullock looks simply stunning at the premiere of her new movie Gravity, wearing an asymmetric LWD and Emma Watson wowed in a white off-the-shoulder number by J Mendel, which she paired with metallic heels and red lips. Every celebrity worth their salt has been wearing white on the red carpet, so I’m going to take a leaf out of their book and go for white this winter. Here are my favourite LWDs so far:
Merino wool skater dress
More of a cream than a white, I know, but I just love the simplicity of this merino wool skater style dress, which is one of La Redoute’s collection of white and beige frocks. The raised herringbone pattern adds texture and interest and the long sleeves make it stand out from the crowd. It’s one of those wardrobe items you can pretty much wear anywhere – whether you team it with opaques and brogues for a shopping trip or statement jewellery and heels for a night out.
Beaded Valentino mini dress
Out of my price range, by quite a big margin, but a girl can dream… Valentino’s beaded mini dress costs a whopping £6,300 and each piece takes four craftsmen a week to complete, using a special loom to create the beaded finish. It truly is beautiful, although, even if I could afford it, I’m not sure I’d ever dare wear it. I love the way Valentino styled it on the runway with patent white handbags and shoes with sheer white socks.
Vintage tea dress
The vintage trend shows no sign of waning because of the unique finds you can pick up that you know no one else will be wearing. I love this floral and polka dot day dress from vintage specialists Rokit While it’s being sold as a spring/summer piece, it would look amazing teamed with chunky boots and a biker jacket for autumn.
Retro-style shirt dress
This mid-length white dress by Madame Ines de la Fressange is just so darn cute. It looks like it should have its own guest appearance in Mad Men. I’m going to wear it with ankle boots, socks and a boyfriend cardigan for autumn, then tuck it away ready for summer when I’ll team it will tan and gold accessories.
J Mendel cut out dress
Designer J Mendel definitely seems to be a celeb favourite at the moment, with everyone from Zooey Dechanel to Gisele Bundchen wearing Gilles Mendel’s designs. I loved Miranda Kerr’s white long sleeve cut out dress, which she wore to premiere of husband Orlando Bloom’s Broadway appearance in Romeo and Juliet. It manages to be both demure and sexy at the same time, with a high neckline and low hemline, but sheer panelling and edgy geometric shapes.
So, there you have it, my perfect high street, designer and vintage white winter dresses.
