The Fat Hippo; the burger mecca of the North East and somewhere I have been desperate to visit since seeing various burger and shake photos popping up on lots of blogger's Instagram accounts and blogs.

Located in Newcastle, Jesmond and most recently in Durham, Fat Hippo is known as the place to go if you want a really good, messy burger with all of the trimmings, it's a meat lovers haven. The menu is enough to make your mouth water and the choice of starters, mains and desserts is enough to keep everyone happy.

I was invited to sample the menu at Fat Hippo Durham, located on Saddler Street and open daily it's the new go-to place in town for all of the students and residents alike, it's central, it's easy to find and there's parking close by.

The restaurant decor is much like a lot of restaurants I have visited recently, with exposed brick, wooden benches and flooring, hanging lights and neon signs - it's very cool and laid back with a really relaxed feeling about the place. We were greeted at the door and taken upstairs to our seat in the window with perfect views of the street below, and let's face it, who doesn't enjoy a bit of people watching while you wait for your food?!
We ordered chocolate and vanilla milkshakes which arrived promptly in red tin cups... They were ice cold, thick and full of flavour, just how I like my shakes.

We ordered two starters to share between ourselves; The Mac n Cheese Balls, who could resist deep fried macaroni cheese and served with Alabama White BBQ sauce?! and the Dirty Skins, a huge bowl of double fried potato skins topped with bacon bits and Fat Hippo sauce.

Both of the starters were absolutely delicious, the Mac n Cheese Balls were huge and tightly packed with macaroni and the skins were perfectly cooked, with the tangy and slightly spicy sauce being the perfect partner with the bacon bits.
The only problem with these were that the portions were so big and with the thought of two big burgers to follow, we didn't manage to finish either plate! However if you have a big enough appetite I'd highly recommend either of these to start with, they were very tasty.
When it came to the main event I chose the Filthy Animal burger which consists of a brioche bun, double 4oz patty, topped with cheese, pork rib meat, streaky bacon and Filthy Sauce with triple fried hand cut chips.
Ray ordered the Fat Hippo burger; a double 4oz patty, topped with streaky bacon, chorizo, cheese, onion rings and Fat Hippo Sauce with a side order of sweet potato fries.

The burgers were huge and juicy, and both buns were filled to maximum capacity. The pork rib meat in my burger was really tender and sweet tasting. Combined together with the cheese and Flithy Sauce it created such a melt in the mouth delight for my taste buds and with the burger and super soft bun it is definitely up there as one of the burgers I will find myself talking about for months to come and telling all of my friends to try - So if you're reading this and you're ever near a Fat Hippo, go and try the Filthy Animal!

I was so sad that I found myself too full to try a dessert, as I had my heart set on the Cookie Dough Pie - How amazing does that sound?! But seriously, I was in a meat coma for the rest of the day thanks to the giant portions with the starter and main... Next time I visit I'm going to skip the starter to make sure I can squeeze in something sweet at the end.

If you're in the North East and looking for somewhere with great staff, great atmosphere and even better food, I can't recommend this place enough!
Have you been to any of the Fat Hippo restaurants before?
