Flat White Kitchen in Durham is a little place I have walked past numerous times and wouldn't have necessarily taken much notice of if it hadn't been for the queue of people waiting to get inside each time.

Located on Saddler Street, it's surrounded by other places to eat including Fat Hippo and Bill's, but something told me it must be good if people are willing to wait to go in here rather than go elsewhere.
From the outside, it's a tiny (yet very cute) white building, with planted trees either side of a little bench which sits underneath the window with a bright vase of sunflowers on display.
Inside is much bigger than you would expect with a large staircase separating the preparation and serving area and the seating which is at the back and continued upstairs.
The decor is simple and rustic with exposed brick walls, chunky wooden benches, industrial style metal seats and stools and a lot of plants, everywhere is really bright and airy - It's so Instagram worthy it hurts!

The menu offers breakfasts, bunch, lunch and snacks, coffees and juices and the most delicious array of home baked cakes and tray bakes.
If you're on a health kick there are plenty of options which are really good for you, and on the other hand, if you're looking for something really indulgent and naughty, then you're in the right place too.

Our drinks order was easy, a freshly pressed apple juice for myself and a latte for Ray... It was the decision on the food which took us a little longer! Thankfully the staff in this place are really lovely, and didn't mind that we were taking longer than most to decide what to eat.

Trying to be good, Ray ordered the avocado on sourdough toast with chilli flakes, feta and coriander and chose to add two poached eggs - It looked amazing, so colourful and fresh!
I, on the other hand went for possibly the most unhealthy choice on the menu (which looked equally as amazing!); ricotta pancakes with fresh fruit, maple syrup and cinder toffee butter. Although this may have been a bit of a naughty choice, I had heard so many good things about their pancakes and I really couldn't resist giving them a try. It was completely worth the calories too, they were easily the best pancakes I have ever eaten.
The portion was huge, and a few people even gasped as the waitress brought my plate into the room!

I have to clarify that I didn't eat the whole plate of pancakes, they were so, so delicious but I just couldn't manage them all in one go, and I have quite the sweet tooth, which just goes to prove how big the portion actually was.

Myself and Ray both commented that we were hugely impressed with our food and the service and can't wait to visit again.
After seeing them coming into the room for other tables, I have already decided that I need to try their bacon sandwich and the strawberry shortbread pancakes next time I go back... They both looked equally incredible!

Described as proud to be local and proud to be independent, this is a place I will continue to support.
