The new food court in Eldon Square, Newcastle has recently opened packed full of restaurants and eateries to suit all tastes. I have of course got every intention of visiting all of the places on offer, purely for review purposes for my blog (wink wink!)
Last week I went along to the first place I have been desperate to try, especially after scrolling through their Instagram feed; Smashburger.
Smashburger is a fast food, burger restaurant which originated in the US ten years ago. It has a very similar style of laid back, casual dining to the likes of Five Guys, but I'm going to say it now, I much prefer Smashburger.
The menu focuses on 100% Angus beef burgers, chicken burgers, salads, sides and shakes. Vegetarian options are available, as well as crating your own burger with a variety of toppings and sides.
I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger; 100% beef burger, Applewood smoked bacon, blue cheese crumbles (which I asked for instead of the American cheese), mustard and ketchup on a Smash bun with Smashfries on the side (regular fries tossed in Italian olive oil, rosemary and garlic) and a side of Haystack onions to share.
Ray chose the Spicy Jalapeño Baja; 100% beef burger, fresh jalapeños with guacamole, Monterey Jack, lettuce, tomato, onion and chipotle mayo on a spicy chipotle bun with a side of French fries.
As we were so thirsty, we opted for peach ice tea and a water to drink, but next time I'll be ordering a milkshake... They looked so good and they're made with Haagen Dazs ice cream!
Service was fast, and the food looked amazing, laid out on trays covered in decorative paper... It's perfect for an Insta flatlay!
My food was delicious, and the small option for the fries was easily enough for me (I didn't quite manage to eat them all). My burger was juicy, the blue cheese was tangy and all of the flavours worked perfectly together.
I have to say though, the highlight of the meal for me was definitely the Haystack onions; thin, crispy, deep fried onion strings, with a pot of mayo to dip in, they make the perfect side order... I can't rave about them enough, they tasted amazing, and I have to admit, I could have easily eaten another portion.
For a quick meal when you fancy something a bit naughty, I'd definitely recommend Smashburger. A great option for families or groups of friends between shopping.
